On 4/6/21, the boys and girls track and field team opened their season under new Head Coach, TJ Lovejoy. The Cougars started the meet off with record-breaking marks in the field events. Freshmen Isabelle “Izzy” Cameron led the way in Long Jump with a jump of 13’4ft, crushing the former record of 11’6ft set back in 2012! The next record to fall was the Discus, thrown by Sophomore Carson Dillard, with a throw of 96’11ft. Dillard would also go on to throw 30’8.5ft in the shot. The previous record in Discus of 88’2ft was set back in 2018. And lastly, in the field events, Hannah Winn came out swinging in the discus with a throw of 60’9 to start a new record for the school. Aiding in the crumbling of records on the throws was another Sophomore, Evelynn “Evie” Eldridge, who threw 27’8.5ft in the Shot Put, beating the previous record of 22’8ft which was also set back in 2012. Evie would also go on to compete in Discus and throw 54’4ft. Joining Izzy in the long jump was Freshmen Daniel Zhou, in his first track meet ever, with a jump of 14′ 9.25ft.
Leading the track was the boys 4x800m relay team, which consisted of Sophomore Lucas Miller, Freshmen Carter Pierce and Beck Rich, and Junior Owen Harder. The boys 4x800m relay team set the tone for the rest of the meet by taking first place with a time of 9:39.1. This lead to the girls 4x100m relay team who also took first with a time of 58.3 seconds.
The wins didn’t stop with the relays. Junior Whitney Smith decided to take both the 800m and 1600m titles with a time of 2:43.2 in the 800m race and 6:00.7 in the 1600m race. And Junior Owen Harder took the 800m race with a time of 2:12.6. The rest of the Cougars had outstanding performances that set the standard for the remainder of the season as they continue to train.
Both the boys and girls teams finished the meet in 3rd place. The Cougars are set to compete next in the Johnson County Meet on April 20th, 2021. The individual times and marks are attached in the link below in an excel sheet.
